Market Notes - January 25, 2010

Stocks were poised for a strong start following last week’s pullback.

The most notable economic report of the day comes at 10:00 am ET, when the National Association of Realtors is out with existing home sales for December. Economists surveyed predict that sales fell 11.6% in December, compared to a 7.4% rise in November.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index and the Case-Shiller Home Price Index are scheduled tomorrow, and the FOMC begins its two-day meeting which culminates with the announcement Wednesday. Also on that day, we will get a look at the new home sales numbers. The weekly jobless claims report and the Durable Goods Orders will be released Thursday. We end the week with the advanced GDP report, the Employment Cost Index, and the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment index.
