Market Notes - August 20, 2009

U.S. stock index futures paired earlier gains after the government said jobless claims unexpectedly rose last week. The Labor Department reported that the number of initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits rose 15,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 576,000. Analysts had expected to see a small drop. Continuing claims also ticked slightly higher.

The Conference Board's report on leading economic indicators is due at 10 a.m. ET. A regional manufacturing survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia is also on tap.
