U. S. stock index futures were mixed ahead of the open.
The labor market showed mild improvement as the number of Americans filing claims for jobless benefits dropped for a fourth straight week, a sign that employers are retaining more workers as the economy expands. Initial claims fell by 4,000 to 444,000 last week, slightly less than expected. Continuing claims rose slightly to 4.627 million.
