Market Notes - May 12, 2010

Stock futures rose modestly as the European debt fears eased and investors return their focus to the economy. Investors will get several reports this week that should provide more insight into the health of the economy. Reports due later this week are expected to show jobless claims dipped last week, while retail sales, industrial production and consumer sentiment are all rising.

Today, a Commerce Department report showed the U.S. trade deficit rose to a 15-month high, as higher oil import prices offset another strong gain in exports. Imports and exports jumped 3.1% and 3.2% respectively. The report is evidence of a rebounding U.S. economy.
