Market Notes - October 5, 2009

U.S. stocks were set for a positive start early today, as investors look for buying opportunities after the recent selloff.

Quarterly earnings releases begin this week with Alcoa, Yum Brands, Costco, and Family Dollar among those reporting. The economic calendar is light this week, with only one report of note scheduled today. The Institute for Supply Management will be out with its monthly non-manufacturing index at 10:00 am ET. The consensus for that number comes in exactly at 50, the dividing line between growth and contraction.

On Thursday, U.S. retailers report sales for September, the Bank of England and the European Central Bank separately announce their interest rate policy, and we will also get the weekly jobless claims. We end the week with data on international trade.
