Market Notes - October 21, 2009

Positive earnings news failed to generate momentum from investors this morning, setting the stage for Wall Street to open lower. Stocks fell Tuesday, dragged lower by mixed earnings reports, including disappointing results from DuPont and Coca-Cola, and a weak reading on the housing market.

The economic calendar is light today. The most prominent report of the day comes from the Federal Reserve, which will release its Beige Book at 2:00 pm ET. Also on the calendar, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported another drop in home loan applications. Tomorrow, we will get the weekly jobless claims number and the Conference Board’s index of leading indicators, which has risen for five consecutive months. On Friday we will get data on existing home sales.
