Market Notes - September 17, 2009

Stock futures were mixed early and showed little reaction to the economic reports released before the bell.

The number of Americans filing for initial unemployment insurance fell last week, while continuing claims climbed higher. The number of new claims fell by 12,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 545,000, while analysts were expecting a reading closer to 555,000. The government said 6,230,000 people filed continuing claims in the week ending September 5, up 129,000 from the preceding week.

New housing starts rose 1.5% to an annual rate of 598,000, near the consensus. New building permits, which give a sense of future home construction, climbed 2.7% to 579,000 in August.
