Stocks were set for a mixed open following the strong gains from the previous session.
On the economic front, the number of Americans filing for initial unemployment insurance fell to the lowest level in six months. There were 522,000 initial jobless claims filed in the week ending July 11, down 47,000 from a higher revised 569,000 in the previous week. The number was much less than the consensus estimate of 533,000.
After the close, Google and IBM are scheduled to report earnings, both of which are expected to be better than a year ago. Major earnings reports will continue into Friday, with Bank of America, Citigroup, and General Electric reporting before the opening bell.
