Market Notes - June 24, 2009

U.S. stocks were poised to open higher as investors wait to hear what the Federal Reserve policy makers say about the economy. The Federal Open Market Committee will conclude its two-day meeting with an announcement at 2:15pm ET. The central bank is expected to hold rates steady near zero.

The durable-goods orders report was released prior to the open. The results were much better than expected, helping add to the futures gain. Durable-goods orders rose 1.8% last month, triple the 0.6% expected gain and helped by strong aircraft sales.

A report on new home sales is still to come at 10:00 am and crude inventories at 10:30 am. New home sales are expected to have risen to 360,000 annualized units versus 352,000 in April.
