U.S. stocks were poised to open higher as investors wait to hear what the Federal Reserve policy makers say about the economy. The Federal Open Market Committee will conclude its two-day meeting with an announcement at 2:15pm ET. The central bank is expected to hold rates steady near zero.
The durable-goods orders report was released prior to the open. The results were much better than expected, helping add to the futures gain. Durable-goods orders rose 1.8% last month, triple the 0.6% expected gain and helped by strong aircraft sales.
A report on new home sales is still to come at 10:00 am and crude inventories at 10:30 am. New home sales are expected to have risen to 360,000 annualized units versus 352,000 in April.
