Market Notes - May 20, 2010

U.S. stock index futures pointed to a sharply lower opening as European shares slumped and the euro hit session lows.

On the domestic economic front, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose unexpectedly last week. Initial jobless claims climbed 25,000 to 471,000, exceeding forecasts. The number of people receiving unemployment insurance and those getting extended payments fell.

Also after trading begins, the Conference Board will release its index of leading economic indicators. The index is expected to have risen 0.2% in April after rising 1.4% in March. At the same time, the Philadelphia Fed index, a regional manufacturing survey, is expected to have risen slightly.
