Market Notes - February 22, 2010

Stocks appeared set to continue the trend higher, helped by an upbeat earnings announcement from Lowe's and a merger agreement between oil services companies Schlumberger and Smith International.

A busy week of economic data gets off to a slow start, with nothing scheduled for today. The S&P Case/Shiller Home Price Index and a report on consumer confidence will be released tomorrow. Data on new home sales is scheduled for Wednesday. Thursday picks up with the weekly jobless claims number and January’s Durable Goods Orders. We finish the week with reports on consumer sentiment, existing home sales, Chicago PMI, and preliminary fourth quarter GDP.
