Market Notes - January 7, 2010

U.S. stocks appeared set to open lower despite a better-than-expected weekly jobless claims report.

The Labor Department reported that the number of first-time filers for unemployment insurance totaled 434,000 in the week ended January 2, an increase of 1,000 compared to revised figures from the previous week. Expectations called for a rise to 439,000. This report comes a day before the government’s closely watched Employment Situation report. The consensus range for non-farm payrolls is from a loss of 50,000 jobs to an addition of 40,000.
