Market Notes - January 11, 2010

Stocks were poised to start the week higher, following rallies in major markets in Europe and Asia. Today also kicks off the earnings season of fourth quarter results with Dow component Alcoa releasing its numbers after the bell. Later this week, Intel and JPMorgan post quarterly figures.

Though it promises to be an event-filled week, the economic and earnings calendar is on the light side for the start. No major economic reports are set for release today. We will get trade data tomorrow and the Fed issues its beige book on Wednesday. On Thursday we will get data on retail sales and the weekly jobless claims number. We end the week with reports on consumer prices, industrial production, capacity utilization, and consumer sentiment.
