Market Notes - December 7, 2009

U.S. stock futures traded slightly lower ahead of the open, pointing to a slow start. Friday’s much better than expected non-farm payrolls data prompted speculation that rates could rise earlier than expected, which strengthened the dollar and put downward pressure on gold and commodities.

On the economic front, there are no major reports scheduled until Thursday. The October consumer credit report is due this afternoon, but it is not usually a market mover. On Thursday, investors will turn to the weekly jobless claims to confirm improvement in the labor market, and we will get information on international trade. On Friday we will get reports on retail sales, import and export prices, consumer sentiment, and business inventories.
