Market Notes - December 17, 2009

Stocks appeared set to start the day lower, influenced by weakness in overseas markets and a report that showed initial jobless claims unexpectedly increased last week.

The government said the number of U.S. works filing new applications for jobless insurance unexpectedly rose 7,000 to a seasonally adjusted 480,000 in the week ended December 12 from a slightly lower revised 473,000 in the prior week. The November Index of Leading Indicators, from the Conference Board, is due out shortly after trading begins. The LEI is expected to have risen 0.7%, after rising 0.3% in October. At the same time, the Philadelphia Fed Index, a regional read on manufacturing, is expected to have fallen to 16.0 for December, slightly below the November reading of 16.7.
