Market Notes - July 30, 2009

U.S. stocks appear set to open higher although trading could be volatile as investors take in another round of corporate earnings reports. The markets saw positive earnings from Colgate-Palmolive and Motorola, while Exxon Mobil disappointed.

Initial claims for the week ending July 25 rose to 584,000 from an upwardly revised 559,000 in the previous week. Economists were expecting 575,000. However, continuing claims declined 54,000 to 6.197 million, which brought the streak of improvement in that number to three weeks.
